The Jews who followed Christ in the early first century must have experienced shock and amazement as they began to understand the times that they were living in. This time had been long awaited since the Redeemer was promised in the garden. It was declared to Abraham, promised by Jacob, proclaimed by Moses, and sung about throughout the Psalms. Isaiah described the life of the Messiah in detail. This coming King was also foretold by the prophets Daniel , Micah, Zechariah, and Malachi. The Israelites passed down this promise of the Messiah for generations with great hope, until the quietly passing years made it almost seem like a fairy tale. It was a very, very long wait.
Now, suddenly this promise had been fulfilled, and they had the privilege of being the first generation alive to receive it. In the midst of the joy of this moment, an unexpected obstacle arose. These believing Jews found themselves at odds with their own people, their own faith, and their own congregations. Many needed assurance to defend their beliefs.
The book of Hebrews seems to be written to strengthen these believing Jews and equip them to defend their faith. Because Hebrews quotes often from the Greek version of the Old Testament, called the Septuagint, the primary audience may have been Hellenistic Jews.
These Jews had adopted the language and culture of the Greeks, and often lived in the Greco-Roman areas outside of Jerusalem. They were deep within secular culture, living as outsiders in every way.
The original title in the oldest manuscripts is “to the Hebrews.” This indicates a letter; however, unlike the other epistles, there is no opening salutation to identify the author. Although there is much speculation among scholars on the authors, as well as countering evidence against each theory, the truth is that we do not know with biblical certainty who wrote this book.
Dr. Albert Mohler writes, “Three things we do know about the Epistle to the Hebrews are that it was written to the church of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:16-17), it plays a unique role in the canon, and it instructs all Christians on how to read the Old Testament in proper relation to Christ.” Let’s dive into the book of Hebrews, keeping our Old Testament open to remember the promise of Christ.
