What do people call you? Sister, friend, Mom, Grandma? Each of these titles says something about you. Of course, you have a first name that your parents picked just for you. You also have a last name that identifies your family. Your middle name might have a special family significance, or it might be as unique to you as your first name.
God also has many names and many titles. Each one tells us something unique about His character. When Jesus prayed, He said that we should “hallow” God’s name. (Matthew 6:9- 13) When we hallow something, we designate it as holy; we exalt it with special significance. If we are to exalt God’s name, shouldn’t we know it well? According to Psalm 9:10, when we know God’s name, we can put our trust in Him. This makes sense. You might trust a grandmother or an aunt because you know them well; you know their character, and this strengthens your confidence in them. The same is true of God. When we study His many names, we start to understand His character more deeply, which helps us place our confidence in Him.
