The book of Esther teaches us that we can be God-fearing in a godless culture, we can handle ourselves with godly character, and we will see Him direct our paths for His good purposes!
The accounts in Esther introduce us to a young Jewess and her guardian who were used by God in remarkable, courageous ways to bring rescue to His people and blessing to the entire godless nation. In the midst of argument, turmoil, and plans to wipe out God’s people— again—we see the sovereignty of the Lord moving. Like a whisper of wind in some moments, and like the violence of a sandstorm in others, God works spectacularly and then supernaturally moves in someone to write it down so we experience the blessing of it as well!
When we read Esther we are witness to godly character from an outside perspective. It feels similar to what our non-believing friends and family must see when they watch us live godly lives.
The Book of Esther is beautiful in its nuanced theology—it does not have treatises or defenses of the faith, it doesn’t give instructions for following God’s law—in fact we don’t see the words pray or God anywhere! What we do see is God’s people doing life—and their actions coupled with God’s movement bring about many conversions.
